I've got a lazy gearchange on my e320 1995 5 speed auto.

the accelerator pedal firstly is really firm to press, it engages normally when D is selected, but have to wait a couple of seconds after I have depressed the accelerator pedal quite a bit before the car moves. Again the same in reverse have wait, then suddenly goes into reverse.

Changing gear, from 1 to 2, you can feel the gearchange, otherwise the box is fine....and pulls through the gears fine.

Could it be transmission fluid or do I need to adjust some cable or screw ?

Apart from this niggle...this is my first "classic" merc,...I am impressed with the car considering its 12 years old.

Hello and welcome to the forum, first the cables can get stiff, they can be lubricated with PTFE/Silicon, these are non drying unlike WD40.

If the fear box has not had a fluid change, why not do it,most comment on the smoother changes, you also have vacuum pipes going to the box, make sure that they are all working

As the ATF heats up, it will become less viscous. This will be a real issue if the box is low on ATF. I'd drop the pan and change the filter, put fresh ATF in there and lube the linkage for the throttle, the throttle cable and check all the vac conections at TV suggested.

It will feel like a new car.

Thanks for the input chaps

I will definately get that done...do I need any special tools, because I read somewhere you need a special dipstick to check the level at 80 degrees.

Also will anyone recommend which fluid to use or shall I stick with MB fluid ( I think GSF sell it too).

The procedure as I have read is:

Drain the gearbox, remove cover, remove filter, drain torque convertor, replace with new filter and gasket, fit the cover, put in 6 litres, go for drive, check fluid temp with infra red thermometer, top up to 80 degree level... should take 7.3 litres...done.

Do I need the special dipstick, because I checked the dipstick on the car and that shows 30 degree and 80 degree levels..

If i need the special dipstick and infra red thermometer..let me know so I can get them before my brother comes back from holiday (he's changing the fluid):D

Dipstick depends whether this is a W124 or a W210 chassis. On a W124 the dipstick is above the exhaust manifold at the back and has a red top with a black clip

Sorry its a W124 Coupe...
I've had a look...and there is marking on the dipstick :D..presumably the level at different temps 90 and 180 degress F.

Now can anyone guide me on the type of fluid...I read the DIY section and I think the writeup mentioned MB fluid.

Regular 4-speeds take Dextron 2. 5-speeds take a strict diet of MB "Electric Fluid" at £7 / litre

Thank You all

Most welcome.

Another tip for you. Do not buy the pattern sump gasket. Get the MB one as it will not distort as you torque up the pan on the tranny. Don't ask me how I know this.)

Also, I know this is not pleasant, but wet the area under the car to damp down the dust and make sure you bag up the pan as you remove it to keep dirt out of it. Keep changing your gloves as soon as they get soiled, as any dirt transferred from the outside of the pan to the inside will mean trouble ahead for the valve block and governor. Cleanliness is your best friend when dealing with the auto transmissions.

It is an easy job to change the ATF, if a bit messy, but the rewards are good. If you want top quality ATF and advice on lubes, try www.difflock.com and tell Peter or Simon that Jim Darling sent you over. He supplies all my lubes (for both cars and the bike) mail order and they are of the highest quality and the mail order service is brilliant. He can spec up up all the kubes you need if you give him the model, year and maybe the VIN. My W124's, Rangie and W202 always used his stuff and are trouble free in the slippy bits.)
