leaking auto gearbox

i recently posted a thread concerning leaking diesel, after the fourth visit to my local garage, reconditioned fuel pump and new connecting pipes etc they have told me that the gear box is leaking and probably dripping onto hot pipe hence the smell in the car. they have adviced me that they are unable to precisely diagnose where the leak is and suggested i go to merc garage or auto gearbox specialist. the gearbox runs through the gears well with no clunks etc. any ideas about what the leak might be, a bit concerned that my local garage whom i have used for many years with several different cars are unable to sort this. any ideas before i spend lots more money with the merc garage

What car are we talking about??? rough guess gearbox pilot bush £16.95 and some oil.

sorry should have mentioned that the car is a 2003 220 cdi and found small amount of gearbox oil under the car which was clear, not a mechanic hence the vague question

Jibs answer above still covers it, a fairly common problem

Pilot bush is on the drivers side of the gearbox, its held in place with a 7mm bolt, updated bush has black rubber seals x 2. If local to cambs come in and I will do it for you.

Easy job.

many thanks for the reply there is a local merc specialist garage near me not charging main dealer prices, will see if they can fit me in.
