I have the old W210 320 CDi straight 6, if I were to get a newer "E" when did the V6 come out, also what is the E280 CDi.
Which is the best engine?

In my mind the older!

The 642 lump has a few faults

1, inlet port shut off motor.

2, cranksensor, recalled but still breaking down

3, front main big end bearing knocking heavy

4,kicking oil out the oil filler cap.cant resolve it

I know the older ones at first had there faults but i really think this is a duff lump.

Only my thoughts!!!

The 280cdi is the same basic engine thats in the 320cdi. Both are the 3 litre V6s but the 280cdi has a bit less powerful. Just to add to Mr units comments that its been recognised that the newer engines are more refined buy significantly worse on fuel. They also come with the 7sp box which isn't neccessarily a good thing. Nowt wrong with a later (2004-2005) straight 6 320cdi or a less powerful model. Both the facelifted 2006 onwards 220cdi E class and older 220cdi/270cdi cars are worth a look.

Definitely worth driving the facelifted 220cdi which may surprise you with just how nimble it is. BHP is up to 170 compared with 190 for the 280cdi. Not a great difference and the 220cdi is a good bit lighter being a 4 cylinder unit.

Coupled to the ever-so-reliable 5 speed box, it gives plenty of 'get-up-and-go'.

IMO most diesels do not need more than 5 speeds as they have so much torque

My W210 320CDI has the characteristic tappety tap tap noise which is know to Mercedes but not fixable.
Do the later 320CDi straight six still have this problem?
Which engine/year have this 624 lump?

I tow a lot and want as much torque as possible, does that mean the later V6 or old Straight 6?

Main points of owning a merc is the badge, looks and the superb ride quality.
The seven speed box just adds to the ride quality as you dont feel any gear changes as it wafts up to speed.
Nothing wrong with the 220cdi but personally the 4 cylinder is not for me, nothing like hearing the rumble of the 3.0 V6 plus i know that whatever i ask it to do the 280cdi is never under any strain.

I've driven numerous MBs with the seven speed box and none have yet been any smoother than the 5 speed box on the S320cdi I owned (220 series) or than the one on my current E estate. Truth is both boxes are excellent (provided the 7 speed has had all the updates done as occasional jerkiness aflicted many without these updates). It's like arguing about which piece of silk is the smoothest -both are pretty good.

I accept there is a case for the V6 engine and have posted several times how quiet and refined it is. For those who are happy with the extra cost, depreciation, fuel and VED bills, the 320cdi and 280cdi are good to drive.

But the 220cdi is surprisingly good too, and suits many, including me. Worth trying them all when choosing.
