You could try Bristol cameras, I bought mine from them and found they were very competative on price, it was some while ago mind.

im a bit of a camera person (facts wise as i sell a few, but dont have any atm)

first you need to decide on digital slr or digital compact (there is a version between them both where the slr lense does not come off)

ive got both

go for a name you have heard of not some dodge pot south korean cheapo rubbish off qvc

then go for around 7mp (mega pixels) as a very good start

my compact does 3x optical zoom, my slr does 10x (but mine are over 1 year old)

olympus and cannon are my favs and for around £200 you can get a nice one

for me zoom is most important as they will say 30x but thats usually digital zoom (my video camera goes to 500x digital zoom and thats un usable)

amazon are a good place to buy but not overly cheap

this place is a great place to check stats and compare prices

Hi digisatman

But what kind of features are you looking for in a digital camera? I'm a camera person and I recently purchased a Canon G9 from eGears and saved about GBP200.00. approx. 45 percent discount. But this camera is at the professional end of the market, a 12.1Mp compact. eGears sell other cheaper digital cameras if that's what you are after. I carry a camera in my Mercedes, just in case.

OK it`s only my personal preference but I am sold on the Panasonic "Lumix" range of cameras. Why ? because they use the Leica lenses which are brilliant and their electronics are better so you get a camera that is better than the Leica at half the price.

Totally agree. I'm a semi-pro sports photographer and unless I'm shooting 'proper' stuff I use my Lumix FX01. I've also bought similar cameras for my girlfriend and mother, both of whom think they're great. The Lumix cameras have the rare feature that they're 28mm at the wide end, which is great on a digital, where traditionally they tend to be slightly too telephoto (poor for group shots, panoramas, etc).

Edit: By the way, more megapixels does NOT make it a camera better.

I'm not an expert but I generally visit a website and pick a couple in the right price range to start with, then put the model nos in google and always find loads of expert reviews. They generally conclude that it's good but not as good as the sector leader 'X' and I buy that instead :)

I agree about the wide angle bit. I find that so many push for optical zoom without looking at the wide angle, which means it is difficult to get the whole shot in a lot of situations.

To that end, www.dpreview.com is very good.

Endorse DP Review.
Park Cameras is v good if you want an slr or lenses - very helpful and even took back a lens I bought and then changed my mind.
I'm a Nikon man but I think Canon or Panasonic are better for compacts.

I've bought one from pixmania.com and another from dabs.com but the search engines normally come up with the best price. After all, its a boxed known commodity so the supplier doesn't really matter.

Wait until there's a problem with it and you have to return it. In my experience online retailers were not born equal.

Pro friend of mine recommends www.digitalrev.com

His tip is to see what camera/lenses you want and then order from this site. He's bought several Canon Pro-series lenses from them and says they are a very good retailer. Delivery from HK only takes a few days

Ken Rockwell does not have a lot of credibility with the serious photography set. Some of his "reviews" have been proven unreliable.

The 2 best IMO are :-

www.naturfotograf.com
www.photozone.de (it's in English)

Don't get blown away with the number of pixels on a compact - they are small sensors so the higher the number of pixels the more that have to be crammed into the same space. 8 or 9 mb is plenty on a compact.

Canon G9 seems to currently be the "best" top end compact.

If it's a small point and shoot you are after the world's your oyster.
