Loosing gears

I have an E220 with a four-speed auto box with the sport & economy modes, vintage 1995, recently when the car has been driven about 10 miles or so and the oil starts to get thin, the gearbox looses forth gear and then third gear.
I know the gearbox is probably cream crackered as it has always been very jerky as it changes out of first gear and it’s done a few miles now and it is suffering from wear consistent with it’s age but can anyone suggest a reason for the fault.
Any help would be appreciated.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Well the first thing I'd suggest would be to change the gearbox oil and filter.
