This isn't a Mercedes car I am asking about, but I know you guys on here are very clever so I thought I would ask here first :)

My son has a 3yr old car and today he went out shopping and tried to reverse into a parking bay and it wouldn't go into reverse. He also then found he had lost 1st and 2nd gears too and he had to drive home in 3rd upwards, all of which were working fine. By the time he got home reverse gear was working again and he's just phoned to ask if we know what the problem is and to honest we are clueless here. I am assuming one gear box is pretty much the same as another

It would be useful to know the car...
Having said that I expect it is a front wheel drive shopping trolley of some sort, therefore the linkage/cable to the gearbox could probably do with some adjustment to set it back up.

Lyn, --- Need to know make and model of car involved. Could be something as simple as a selector cable has come out of adjustment.

Oh sorry didn't realise you would need to know the type of car

It's a SEAT Leon Cupra 20v turbo :)

Apparently my other half said when he looked at it earlier the selector cables both seemed okay, they were both pulling the selector in each direction, whatever that means.

Believe it or not he never thrashes the car. Most of the time his wife drives it and it's usually just to work and back. They have only had the car a few months, I think the warranty has just run out :(

Hi
What is the mileage ?
Does the gear stick select the gears when the engine is off ?

Well I've spent the whole morning on the phone to SEAT itself and also some local garages and the concesus seems to be that it's either the selector fork pin of the fork itself, not that I have a clue what that means :(

SEAT main dealers charge £75 an hour labour  and for a gearbox apparently it takes 4.2hrs to take the gearbox out and 4hrs to strip it , based of course on an hour being 100mins. Why do they base an hour on 100mins when an hour is only 60mins, I really don't understand that

Anyway we have booked it into a local place as it's too expensive going to the main dealer, but it's still going to cost around £950 :?

Hi

I would get a second opinion first and not on the phone.
It is not a high mileage car. It may just be an air bubble in the pipes of the clutch hydraulics to the clutch slave cylinder.

Keep us informed.

Well I think the guy that is going to do the car is someone quite a few people we know use and he has a good reputation so I'm sure he won't do something just for the sake of it. I sure hope he doesn't anyway :???:
