The low coolant warning light on my 1995 E300D came on dimly, not as bright as it is during start up. Temperature guage reads normal (slightly above 80 degrees). The coolant level was only slightly low in the reservoir, but adding coolant to the line had no effect on the warning light. Outside temperatures have been hovering in the 40 - 60 degree range, so the auxiliary electric fans have not been running. Car recently got a new wiring harness which solved several problems. Any ideas why the low coolant warning light is on?

I personnally would try replacing the header tank switch first as it sounds like its shorting out.
Had a similar problem on a similarl aged BMW and it proved to be the switch apparently they were quite common to go as the float part of the switch was prone to going porous.
Should,nt be to expensive the one for my 202 was less than £20 from MB.

on my 97. e300 td. i get the led read out telling me the screen wash and engine coolant levels are low, this has happened for 3 years every time i start the engine. i once took it to an auto electrician and he said it was not the sensors, tried shorting them out, it made no difference. he said it was an electronic control fault and was expensive to cure. i have not seeked a second opinion and just keep cancelling the led read out each time it occurs by pressing the "r" button. it's just an irritation and i regularly check my fluid levels manually, i was brought up that way by my father. herbiemercman.
