Any tips out there for diagnosing constant tapping/clacking noise from a M115.972 engine?
So far I've checked valve clearance and oil levels (oil level was a little high but nothing extreme). Replaced plugs and checked contact breaker gap.
I've tried to pinpoint the noise with a metal bar against my ear and various parts of the engine and cant detect anything around the head or top of the block. I need to get underneath and do the same with the lower parts of the block.
The vehicle is currently fuelled with normal unleaded, I'm not 100% on the timing as there is the odd faint pop from the exhaust - I can just see that two man-made alignment marks on the distributor body and block marry up.
Vehicle is a 1982 Hymer based on a petrol Merc Van - not sure which model, the chassis number starts with 601016 which is not supposed to be fitted with a M115 engine so this could be a cheap replacement unit (from what I can gather it should have had a M102 unit), 92000 miles on the clock.
Is there any chance this could be unleaded fuel causing a noise and slight misfire?
Any further tips to help pinpoint and diagnose the problem?

Phew

I bought a engine stethoscope for a fiver which reassured me the noise was top end. Adjusted the valve clearances (inlet 0.10mm, exhaust 0.25mm COLD). The noise is gone.
