Is it possible to drive with the MAF unplugged as a means to test whether or not your MAF needs to be replaced or would that lead to all manner of problems?

Also, is it possible to clean the MAF as opposed to replace it?

Thanks guys.

when u unplug it the ecu takes a stored value from its memory so it will run 'ok' in a limp home mode still needs 2 be replaced and there is no way of cleaning them it has a period after the ignition is switched off where it heats up the film inside the maf and burn's all the dirt off.

IMO do not use carb cleaner - it leaves a residue and even if it does get burned off its not a good place to start. If you have to clean a maf I would suggest using Isopropyl Alcohol IPA (not the bitter!). I got my last lot from Maplins.

Soak the maf in IPA, the wire is very delicate so be careful.

I have been told that you can sometimes get away with cleaning a MAF with carb cleaner. If it's showing a fault, you don't really have much to loose.
