Is there anything one should do to keep the vanes freed up so they continue to operated properly? I have just blown an actuator and am having to wait for one from England being sent out. Can only buy a complete turbo with actuator here. Little bit exxy for a 18 year old ML270.
It will be a month for delivery and am concerned that vanes may jam up from lack of use meantime. Car is still driveable but a bit slow.....am still using it around town meantime.

When at operating temp and all t &p normal just give it a mild thrashing ,diesels are happiest when "working " hold it in the lower gears a bit longer.

Nothing really apart from using premium fuels or adding fuel additives for a cleaner burn.

You can also use something like innotec and clean the turbo manually.

I had to have the turbo rebuilt a couple of years ago on the wives 169, the actuator had seazed and in turn split two of the vacuum hoses. Now I’ve just had to replace the same hoses as the actuator is starting to rust up again due to lack of use (the car hardly moves these days and when it does sometimes only does a few miles so never really getting hot).
You will be fine with the vanes while it sits but when you get things back together, gently get it up to temp and then give it a good long hot run using full throttle often

Have deleted egr 80K ago after manifold cleanout. Motor now blows heaps of black if I give it much throttle, due to lack of air intake. Am having to drive it very gently and avoid hills or anywhere that would normally create boost. Luckily have 2nd car to do majority of driving meantime. Was mainly concerned that vanes would be stuck in one position for quite a while before I can get the actuator fitted.

That's cheap as chips mate. Thanks for that but my issue is with actuator and not the core. Have ordered an actuator from your country but have to wait for delivery. Appreciate the offer.

Ian.

Sorry, I thought you were concerned about keeping the vanes moving freely. A replacement solves that.
Having done that on a C Class years ago it was an awkward job, more so as the bolts on the exhaust side of the turbo don't come out.

What about one of the turbo spray cleaners that are sprayed into the front of the turbo . I used one a couple of years ago , I used the small tube fitted to the spray can .
I pushed the tube into the front of the batwing after loosening the front jubilee clip and sprayed the whole can in short bursts .
Each time the engine shuddered I stopped spraying for a few seconds .

Turbo vanes are at the rear of the turbo. Nothing really cleans them as it can't be reached. Using inotec kit fills the whole turbo like expanding foam/ Mr.muscle. thats the only thing I'd bother using tbh. Everything else is snakeoil.

The incomplete fuel combustion of diesel molecules , further enhanced by the egr devil valve introducing inert sooty exhaust gasses displacing oxygen causing an even worse burn .

Additives increase the burn = less soot .

isn't the turbo upstream of all that malarky?

Sorry. Misunderstood. I have never dismantled a variable vane turbo. My experience has been with turbos fitted with wastegates. Does that core include the variable vane setup. Looks just like a standard one. Piccy on post 13 seems to show something quite separate. I need educating here.
