I really need some help on this one!

On Tuesday evening I got in my car (88 190e 2.0) to drive home (car had not been used for a couple of days but last trip was around 150 miles) and there was a huge loss of power. When I put my foot down, there was no power band and the performance was sluggish all the way and in all gears. When I got on to the motorway, I hit a hill and the car would not go above 45-50 in third (worse in 4th). It was like something was holding the engine back cos every now and then, it would jolt forward like the engine has been freed and then would hold back again. This continued and sometimes it was jerking quite violently.

When I got to the top of the hill, I could smell a burning smell so I pulled off the motorway. I went back home slowly and when I got there I couldn't see anything wrong and it idled fine so I covered all the electrical bits with wd40 and left it for a few hours.

When I drove it after that it was fine. I drove it about 100 miles the next day and it was ok but I couldn't help feeling like there was a lack of power, no jerking, just a general lack of power at all revs. Not sure if this is in my mind though (also seems to be using more fuel). Is this possible? Could one thing cause this sudden problem? Does anyone have any ideas about what caused this sudden lack of power?

Also, does anyone know what/where the fuel meter is/does and if this may have caused the problem?

Can anyone rcommend any good garages around the Leicester or South West London area that charge fair prices and diagnose properly?

Any help is much appreciated, thanks. At least all this car worry is helping to work off the excess booze and turkey!

RPL Carburettor Centre on Shafsbury Road, Leicester would be a good place to start.
