Yes, this old chestnut. I decided to try out the command online system as opposed to my old tomtom and get a map update from Command Online who quoted £250. My local dealer is £149 but can't do it for two weeks. They have cancelled once because their system was down. They want the car for 3-4 hours because there is a software upgrade also. I was also told that it will be the latest 2020 maps and is V14.

Is this a normal time for the job and am I right in thinking V14 is not the latest? I have NTG5.5 I think.

I use the Google driving app on my phone now, much more accurate.

Just a point, ask what the software update does, if it is the engine one say no

According to Comand Online here, V14 is the latest version for NTG5.5 and I would have confidence in what they say. The map update for my NTG5*2 took the Dealer around 40 minutes when they did it at the last service,

I used Google maps occasionally but reception round Devon was not good although much better recently. On the new car I don't really want two screens and the command screen is much clearer than an iPhone.

I think the update is to the Command system not the engine. What's wrong with the new engine upgrade?

OK, I've checked up on the engine software update problems on the forum but I think this may have been done already. I will ask though.

I would wait

the M4 has been dug up form J5 to J10 and every bridge is being relocated to the side by circa 25m with new slip roads leading to and from. Many mercs didn't get an update LY. Either Merc gave up or they are waiting (but that will prob be 18 months away... however might as well get 2022 maps rather than the "old ones"

we ought to have new mapping released any second.... Aug is about the std. release date but seems to take till sept before we see them Watch out for dealers they are all crooks....

as for 3 to 4 hours yes very normal and other fixes on the comand unit worth having (caveat be aware of audio camera warning is turned off on some)

My car had the up to date maps about a year ago. I'd have been very disappointed if I'd paid for them as I've been on improved roads/junctions/etc eg the M6 at the northern end of Lancaster, that are years old and COMAND hasn't had a clue.

there's a form to fill out to get Merc maps up to date.... if no one tells them they often stay wrong, there are many roads that were set up with the current priority, way before transfer to digital mapping happened circa 1997. Its why you hear, turn right in 100 yards when that's the way the road has been since I was driving 40 years ago !!!

and to make matters worse they run 18 months behind the curve... assembling the update in November and releasing as a new disc in August (becoming available as a disc to buy or loaded on your car in October !!!)

so if the road was changed in July 2018, you'll be lucky they notice by Nov 2018, thus its missed the release from Aug 2019 printed as 2020 mapping

hence why I mention to wait for the new ones.... then you'll at least get 2019 updates rather than putting 2018 ones on the car when we're almost in 2021

"what do you want me to do with that..."

to which you point out its their form, they need it and they're customer services, perhaps you could try doing your job !!!!

I took my 2018 GLC for the nav update last week and the most up to date map is V12 2018 , there is a 2019 available for the C class but after a call to MB customer services I was told that there wasn’t a 2020 update available for any comand system and would be notified when there is one available?

I’ve got v13 on my GLC - it was loaded by the dealer as part of my first service in November 2019. The GLC and C Class both use NTG5*2 so it is compatible across both cars.

The exact details you need to tell your dealer are:
v13 (2019), for NTG 5*2, released w/c 19/11/18
Part-Number: A0070018499
Release date: 09.11.2018

Then they need to download the later version!

There have been previous threads about dealers not having the latest version or being reluctant to update maps but you need to insist and call Mercedes Customer Services if the dealer continues to be difficult.

I had the same experience with my last C class and had to give them the part number like you sent me, I’ve already emailed my dealership with the info so will see what they say ???? Thanks again

Phew! Why can't Mercedes get this right? This all seems a bit shambolic on their part. Perhaps the technology is advancing quicker than the training and setup to look after it. Downloading a DVD's worth of data shouldn't take so long but they were telling me that it depends on connection speed.
Anyway, I have decided to postpone the update until the service in September.

Had this response this morning

I have passed this on to the Service Team. Somebody should be in touch with you to make a booking and have the update done.

Check out updates for sale on eBay! £99 for command NTG 5.5 update.
As a DIY it's very easy indeed. Just follow the instructions. Takes around 15 minutes all in!
Did mine last year. No problem.
