I recently bought a 1994 Merc 500SL but have noticed a problem.

It seems that whenever i go over large bumps at speed or take sharp right turns at speed, the ASR lights flash on and then the engine cuts-out. I then have to pull over to side of road and put the it in neutral and restart the engine.

Does anyone have any ideas on why this is and how i can fix it??

Many thanks,

Tony

hmm - could be the dreaded wiring loom degradation that affects all V8s of the early 90's... check by peeling back some insulation (fabric type) on the engine loom.

Or a loose earth connection?

Common fault to check is once again the over voltage relay, it gets dry soldered joints, Yours is in the same place as mine I think in the boot just in front of battery with a fuse on top.
Start the car and give the relay a few taps see what happens, any change in the engine revs, then it needs soldering up. this piece can bring up your two faults, see how it goes
If you have a voltmeter pin 30 will have 12 volts on it, pins 87 should have 12 volt on them in fault condition it drops to 7.5 volt

My 300SL was doing exactly the same initially weeks apart and then more frequently, nearly did for me by cutting out in front of 40 tonnes of French Artic. AA man diagnosed fuel pump relay, had it changed - problem finito!

Unless this car has two faults then it could be any relay, the give away was the ESR/ABS Lamp as these circuits are the first to be protected by the OVR

Thanks for all the advice!!

Will try to give the suggestions a go on the weekend and let you know how it goes. But as i am a mechanical novice please forgive me for my stupidness and answer this question: If i do have the problem with the ovr and i tap it with the engine running, should i expect the revs to go up or down??

Failing this, and the problem is with the fuel pump relay then how much should i expect to pay to get this fixed??

Thanks again!

Tony
