Merc A-class - Bad to Worse!!!

Hi everyone,

SAM/UNIT and Meanie were right....my 2000 (W-reg) CDI A170 A-Class has leaking injector seals.

However, things are going from bad to worse!!!!

My mechanic was able to remove 3 of the seals but the 4th (which was the worst affected) couldn't come out after soeaking so he decided to remove the injector. This would have been ok but the injector isn't coming out either and has now snapped off in the head. There is some of the injector still showing so he is currently having a tool made up to see if he can remove the remaining piece of injector.

I would be really interested to know what my options are as I have been told that if the injector doesn't come out then I am looking at removing and replacing the head!

I hope someone can give me some advice.

There are a few tools available to remove stuborn injectors,many involve taking the top of the injector off and screwing the tool into them.

Mervin,

I really do sympathise with you.

I feel quite strongly that the A class has been a PR disaster for MB for the following reasons.

It was launched to compete with the Ford Focuses of this world and woo buyers from that market. Buyers with the means of 'Focus-man or Astra-man' are not used to being presented with bills of the magnitude for silly design flaws such as those you are experiencing.

The injector seals are just one aspect, I also know a garage that has replaced many A class steering columns at roughly £1k a pop, not what you'd get with a Focus.

If one were to buy an E class, then these bills come with the territory.

Sympathies once again, and I hope that your garage can resolve.

If the injector has broken, you can possibly still rescue the situation by welding a piece of stud-bar into the injector and then build up each side of the stud bar with pieces of metal for support and use a bridge bar across the top and screw the injector out...It is best to use a high tensile steel rod to weld the stud-bar to the injector..
