Quite a few threads on here about autoboxes, the general consesus of opinion is to have the autobox oil checked and changed ..along with the gearbox filter, personally i would have the gearbox reset on a star diagnostic machine as it can make a difference to the changes and basically reset the gearbox. It made a world of difference to my own box

Can a star diagnostic machine be applied to a 1996 E280 4 speed auto box? David

Sadly your box is not an electronic box, and does not have an ECU

Best option with any autobox is to try and canvass as much expert opinion as possible. The fluid check is vital to eliminate the possibility of a low fluid level. next least expensive option is to change the oil and filter, and in a lot of cases this solves the problem.. even the Mb technicians work thru trial and error. so changing the fluid is a bonus and most competent DIYers can do it themselves

MB are now recommending oil and filter changes on the E270cdi at 45k / 3 yearly intervals so you're well overdue. (Mine is 3yrs/50k and it's already been done).

Have the seals checked as they can leak through the electrical connector.
Also depending on other factors you may be the victim of the dreded Valeo radiator issue where coolant has leaked into the gearbox. If so, then you may need a new torque converter. They often recommend a new gearbox too but the general consensus is that this is overkill. If in doubt, have a glycol test done. Alyway, if you do have this issue come back to us.

All in all, get it to an indie specialist - hopefully an oil and filter change will do the trick.

Sorry.... I am new here.... what is an "indie"?

No need to apologise - we were all new once :)

An indie is a non franchised 'independent' specialist - normally a smaller garage run by mechanics who used to work for the official dealerships and had MB training.
