Mercedes 16 plate E220d OM654 reliability 80k-120k miles

As above really I don’t know how many members on here are running this engine beyond 80k miles but would be interested to know what problems they’ve encountered particularly premature camshaft and rocker wear and leaking oil/vacuum tandem pumps. The car in question is my son’s and he’s in a dilemma as to whether at 75k miles he should keep it for another couple of years (25k miles) or trade it in for a newer car, he really doesn’t want the hassle of major repairs as the car is essential to his job. I’d also add that he really likes the car so that’s not a factor in changing.

I'd be tempted at looking at the cost to change now and probably jump - we've had a few Taxi's on here without issue though.

Had a word with a local Independent he’s seen three with the rocker and camshaft wear, one they repaired and the other two repaired elsewhere due to lead time to fit the job in. All three were airport taxis covering 10k miles pm and seeing oil changes every three months so he reckons with regular oil changes there shouldn’t be a problem. The repair cost is £1800 so presented this to my son and at least he has options, probably needs to see what deals he can do now with the car on 75k miles as a P/E or keep it
