I have just bought a mint 1983 280se w126. However from 2nd to 3rd the gearbox slips most times then finds the gear a few seconds late. However this is allowing the car to rev with no gear selected. If i work the gears manually it fixes the problem but I would prefer the auto box to work in Drive.

Do i need to just recondition the gearbox or is there a simple-ish solution to this. I have already changed oil and put lucas auto box repair in but to no avail. Also the car seems to change into 4th gear very quickly making the car rather slow. Was this just how they were set up or is there some sort of cable connected to the engine to tell the car when to change thats broken?

Thanks for any help.

Regards

Lawrence
