I had the above merc for many years and it was my best mate! A mechanic was employed to change the oil in the gearbox. He removed the brake bar pin byu mistake.. I can now only get 1st gear. What damage would this have caused and how would it be remedied. John

Hello Andy. Thanks for your reply - I think that should be "brake band pin". The removal of this resulted in my only being able to get 1st gear, if that's of any help. Regards John

Hi

Sounds to me you are unlucky!!!! He wouldn't of caused this. If just changing the oil & filter. Since you would have to remove the valve chest and companion plate to get any way near it.

I found the c class's with the hydraulic gear box (E\S) seem to suffer with this problem. Trouble is you have to strip the gear box down to sort it. The brake band release tolerence sounds like its very excessive. You may find it damaged the brake band as well. If its has new band, pin and the little plastic clip which holds it in.

DONT let whoever repairs the box fit a non genuine brake band. I have found them the disintergrate over time. We have found them in so called reconned boxes only to cause a problem again at a later date.

Sorry I don't think I made myself all that clear. The mechanic actually remove the brake band pin and took it out. He then couldn't put it back in properly. When he eventually did, he replace the oil in the automatic transmission. I then could only get 1st gear. What damage would this have caused. Regards John
