If you ever are in Stuttgart in Germany go to the MB museum. It's easy to get to on the metro and it's free and excellent. You will never see so many Mercs in one place outside the factory too. All the workers have them.

Also it tells you there why Mercs are called Mercedes - can anyone guess why? I'll post answer later.;)

Even the train station in Stuttgart has a huge MB symbol above it, quite a sight at night when it's lit up.

The new Mercedes museum is opening in Stuttgart just up the road from the existing one in May 2006. I think this will be much larger.

From memory you get a English tour with one of those headphone stick things and that's free too.

Mercs were called Mercedes after one of the founder's daughters who was called Mercedes. I'm not sure if it was Daimler or Benz's daughter though.

Not at all! Mercerdes is the daughter of Emil Jellinek, who was a wealthy businessman /and a great automotive sports fan/ and made the first big orders of Daimler cars. He sold many cars, raced with Daimler cars too, made them famous. After some time he did an agreement with Daimler to begin production of newly developed cars under the name Mercedes /or Daimler-Mercedes.../.

Mercedes - translated from Spanish - means elegance, grace...I'm in love:)

Emile Jellneck raced cars, and sold Daimler cars it was not the fashion to race in ones own name and he used his pretty daughters name Mercedes and so on

you are right Steve this was all at the time when Maybach designed a car and 36 were built for Jellinek with a 5.32 engine full of inovation for the time.
Mercedes (Jellinek) was more on the Daimler side.
