Hi,

I am considering purchasing an automatic Mercedes 220CE or 320CE for my wife.

What I would like to know is what is the fuel economy like on the 220 engines?

With that weight of the W124 Coupe chassis, is there much difference between the fuel economy on the 220 and 320 engines.

Does anybody know where I can find any fuel economy figures for these models?

I would like to hear from any owners of w124's 2/4 doors who have one of these enigines.

Any advice appreciated.

Point Taken, but we both like the W124 Coupe, which does not come with a diesel engine.

I have a 230CE which is fine to drive on the motorway but does lack a little power when you want to drive a spiritedly on B roads and the like. I wouldnt say its slow but it is a bit of a sheep in wolfs clothing.

Mine gets an average of 26 mpg on mixed driving, whereas I believe the 300's get around 23 mpg.

Seems a small penalty really if you want the extra power. Besides which, the six cylinder engines are much smoother to drive.

Personally, if I go for another coupe (which I am considering) I would definately go for a 300 or 320 but then i do have a company petrol card which makes the 10% consumption increase somewhat less painful :)

I am very happy with the perfomance of my 220. It's not blistering but more than adequate in town, it's smooth and quiet and it will happily cruise at 85mph (gets a bit noisy at higher speeds than that). My fuel consumption is around 25 (but I do a lot of city driving and mine is a heavier convertible). The performance is better than I thought before I bought one and I'd buy a 220 again unless I was feeling very flush indeed.

I've recently been lucky enough to get a 1993 300CE and it is an a b s o l u t e BELTER. It has the ability to cover great distances in near silence at immoderate speed in a completely stress free way; overtakes 3 cars instead of just 1 on A roads and drinks less petrol than my 2 litre Volvo (but only when driven gently...)

I know these were good, but just how good I am still learning.

I'd forget completely about fuel consumption; its NOT the point of owning one of these. I got this off my father in law and prefer it to his new clk cabrio. No joke.

220 or 320

Hello,
I have a E320 CE Coupe. I bought it about 4 months ago and everywhere I go it gets heads turning. Go for the 320 as this is the best engine by a long chalk. It is very quiet but expect a few whines when you start it up in the morining (this is the alternator charging). It eats motorway miles and you get to the other end still as fresh as when you got in the car. The acceleration is blistering, yet if driven carefully you can get a good return on the miles. I bought mine from Exeter and brought it back yo Kent at about 85 all the way. I used just over half a tank. Not bad when you consider it is about 210 miles.

Mind you do not buy one that does not have a full history, these cars are becomming rare as hens teeth.

Happy hunting. 8)

I've not had the coupe, but I have had 220, 280 and 320-engined W124's. The 220 was a slug, truly awful performance and sub-20mpg most of the time. The 320 was a peach but drank petrol, but the 280 was a great compromise...

My vote would be to go for the six cylinder, just make sure it's been cared for.
