Hi

just been sent here from a caravan forum.

We have a caravan weighing 1495 kg loaded. we are looking for a tow car that has a good mpg on the motorway (not towing). But has the power to tow ( not bothered about mpg towing) our caravan in hilly areas.

Like the mpg of the E200's but can they pull? (sorry ment anything under 300)

You'll need six cylinders or a 220cdi. The e-class is heavy and the e200 doesn't have much low down grunt.

great

I not looking for mega power/ speed etc as currently towing with a v8 discovery (very slow - but powerful)

we just want a car my husband can commute (mostly motorway) with hence low mpg (I see 220 has best mpg) and safety towing our caravan a few times a year.

Would you say this is the best model for us

Depends on money and model I suppose; if you can stretch to it, I'd get a 320cdi or 270cdi as it would be a torquier engine. They'd all tow the 'van.

my husband does 160 miles a day it's not the price of the model thats a concern it's the mpg & I believe it shoots up with the 270 300. Am I right?

My e270cdi gets around 28-32mpg around town and 40+mpg on the motorway.

What age are you looking for? The facelifted E class 220cdi (from 2006) has 170 hp and will do the job fine. The earlier one had 150hp and will be OK but not as spritely. MB recommend the E class for towing up to 1900kgs.

The E270cdi, and later the E280cdi or E320cdi will have loads of power to spare. The 220cdi has a combined figure of 42.8 mpg and does about 10% more miles per gallon when not towing than the E320cdi (which has a combined figure of 38.7 mpg).

I have the same problem. Bought an E320 cdi of 224 HP. I think it will do the job but I did not try it yet. Thinking to change the radiator fan to a bigger one! Will keep you informed!

regards,

Robert

By coincidence I have both your cars A discovery V8 & a E240 (W210) I always use my Disco to tow my 'van They are times when I have parked up on a "Grass" pitch & the Disco has proved invaluable in getting me "off" again

The E Class will tow your 'Van effortlessly but do look at the Bigger picture i.e "GRASS PITCHES" If you can afford to keep both the Merc for commuting & the Disco for towing ( To quote Alexander "Simples Tch")
