Thinking - possibly dreaming of getting a 4X4.

Would like a manual
Would like diesel

That cuts the choices down a bit. :D

What do you think about the Mercedes ML270 I have not been reading rave reviews about them... regards ride and cornering. I like the looks of this 4X4 and it is a Merc.

ML 2.7

Hello- I have a manual ML2.7 and am very pleased with it. It handles well and is comfortable; averages 31-33mpg. Much much better than new Shogun. Holds price well. Austrian build quality(later ones) much better than US built ones. What does happen is that people buy a 4x4 and expect sports car handling and performance and end up disappointed. The main question is -have you a need for a 4x4? Mine has to 'work' for its living-towing a heavy trailer etc.

Thats the problem, you think the ML must be good because its a Merc, but I found mine (03 ML270 auto) awful in many respects. Economy 25-28MPG. ride was terrible, build quality is apalling, bits fall off in your hand (even when I took it back to the garage (for good) last Friday, the cruise control broke! If you do lots of motorway miles then other owners tell me the ML is OK, but if like me most of your driving is across town then you will hate it
I've had various mercedes in the family since 1990 (always had at least one, between myself and my wife) and always been pleased with them, this last MB that I bought (the ML) has put me off newer MB's for life. She was the first to change and now has a BMW and I've gone back to my trusty old Ford Explorer.
Try one for a couple of days and see what you think
Regards
Chris

Cheers for the welcome.

Glad to here you are happy with your purchase - seems like not too many people like you.

No need for a 4X4, except for some snow. Currenly I am stying in Switzerland and the 4X4 would come in useful few times a year.

Just feel I want a 4x4, a manual and a diesel.

Reasoning
4X4 - above reason
Manual - I am scared of forgetting how to change gears and I think they are simpler and faster.. even though they are probably not.
Diesel - cos the price difference of diesel in Germany and France is big. Economy is a little better too.

Mercedes - Because it is a mercedes.

Other choices.
Toyota Land Cruiser
BMW X5 - no manual
Volvo XC 90
Touareg

Any comments.
