Mercedes on brake callipers

The front brake callipers on my 2004 W211 E320 CDI Avantgarde have the attractive grey painted shields(?) with "Mercedes Benz" lettering visible through the 17" alloys. But the rear callipers have no shields, having just the (ugly) brake mechanism exposed.

Should front and rear brakes match? Or is there a good reason why the front differs from the back? I'm slightly concerned that I'm missing something on the back brakes!

Thanks for your help.

I thought that about my E320, i wondered if at some point the rear shields had been removed. i must admit, i wish the rears did have the shields aswell.

i was wandering just the same a few months back on my w220, i thought it looks rather nifty to have te mercedes benz lettering on the front c.f to the ugly setup on the rear brakes.
I was goint to ask my dealer about this - as i thought there was brake caliper covers missing of the rears, when my cousin turns up in his new cls, guess what exactly the same...........
hope that clarifies, just to be convince yourself, next time you see a newish merc parked up go and have a quick nosey.....

ps i may think it has soemthing has to with the disks, either the front or rear disks have holes in them (i assume this is vented)

do we merc owners demand perfection or what?

The front brakes of any car will do more work than the rears. For this reason, cars with discs brakes front and rear will usually have better front brakes (bigger discs, bigger calipers, vented discs - or any combination of these things).

So your car will have different calipers front and back (plus the back ones have to accommodate the handbrake mechanism too.

Maybe that's why? I can't say I've noticed on mine... the holes in the wheels aren't big enough to see the calipers through!!

I'm all disappointed now. I can't say I've noticed anything on mine! Even with the wheel off and checking the pads, it just looked like a cast block to me so I guess I don't have covers, front or rear.

My ML has grey calipers and Mercedes Benz on the front but not the rear ones must be the norm as they are the originals.

A new 06 SLK that I saw at the weekend had the silver calipers covers with the MB logo the back as well as the front.

the quick answer is no. Only the front calipers are lettered except maybe the AMG models?. They form part of the "sports package" offered as an option on some models, and a standard fit on some sporty models. they are coupled with larger diameter cross drilled front brake discs ,lower firmer suspension and wider wheels with lower aspect ratio tyres. Its a good option to have on your car so dont be too disapponted the rear calipers are plain.
