A= generic
203 = model number
470 = ?
13 = ?
41 = ?
If anybody could give assistance, that would be great. Thank you.

Hello and welcome. The VIN code is your car ID number WDB203-----------
there is a 208470 but not a 203470. for a start put your complete VIN number here including WDB ,17 figures in all to this site and you will get the original spec of your car from new.
http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng

The first three 203/208 is the group of cars that it belongs to, the next 3 is the type of engine fitted to your car, the numbers that follow tell the rest of the manufacture spec:

If you want any part numbers you can get them here. by using the first 6 numbers of the VIN

welcome to the forum

(aside malcolm, i think the post is about part number allocation, not vin number allocation) - ps i bnotice you are on another forum aswell ;)

ok the fisrt few numbers of a parts a part may relate to the part being car model specific,

for eg a part listed A220XXXXX will be for a s class (model just gone), but not always as some parts are made to fit other cars aswell.

if you think that mercedes have been making cars for a long time there are a hell of alot of parts and respective part numbers to be allocated.
i dont kniow how they are designated, but as i say there are alot of parts that need a designation code, maybe its all just random after the first few digits.

maybe someone else has a little more insight on part number allocation..

I think you will find that Mercedes have a very strict numbering system

I havent studied it in depth but a quick scan reveals it is very similar to the VW/AUDI System - and probably all vehicle manufacturers use a similar system.

If we take a 500Sl for instance :-

MODEL / Where andWhat it is / Unique Number

(A)129 / Next 3 digits / Last 4 digits

I think that the (A) suffix on certain part refs show a modification/supercession. The end 4 digits are not totally random either - for instance left and right handed parts will have similar codes seperated by 100 or simliar eg., 1180 , 1280.

You can also see therefore when parts have been reused from other models eg,, the number of 124 series parts on the 129 models on suspension.....

To give another example : xxx 421 xxxx will always be a front brake disk and associated bits - irrespective of model

Only had a quick look but looks very logical to me.

part numbers ..... brief overview

part numbers are made up of 4 sections:

1: model designation 124 / 210 / 211 e class
126 / 140 / 220 s -class etc

2. designation grouping 47? = fuel system 42? = brakes 49? = exhaust
etc

3. usually the siding odd number = left side even = right side

4. usually the `actual part number` etc 18

so a left hand front wing for an e-class w124 is

124 880 49 18

124 = model 124 880 = 88? body panelling (bumper/bonnet/wings)

49 = odd number left side

18 = part number in this case wing

hope this sort of helps
