Hi all ,

Was looking for some advice / guidance regarding the engine sound i hear on cold start every now and again not always on every cold start and only happens on cold start never warm starts on my w204 c200 cdi c class , 2012 , I hear this rattle sound it varies the exact sound , however i have uploaded it i have had timing chain checked it is fine and oil fliter replaced last year along with air fliter and fuel fliter , my machanic thought it might have been the engine cover not put on right bu this now does not seem to be the case..

any comments welcome

That is the timing chain making that noise.

Check the tensioner hasnt failed.

How many miles on the engine?

How has the chain been checked?

Keep in mind, its relatively normal for them to make that noise, for a second or two if the car has been sitting for a while.

Then I would not worry.

If it gets worse, or stays there at idle all the time, then Investigate further.

It's the chain making the noise, so they need to change the tensioner as a first step. Potentially checking the oil pressure on a cold start. Probably best to leave it with them overnight.

No but someone I was using ( mot tester / mechanic ) was passing his own failed shoddy work , wheel bearing and front ARB C Links , I already done a complete driveshaft that he redid as the new outer CV joint had ingress inside of 6 months , was never the same..

100% chain rattle on start up. I'd be going to see your mechanic again if I were you or better still get a second opinion. You don't want that baby going pop.

Mainly Mercedes
You say the mechanic has checked the timing chain, but I would ask him for some detail of exactly how he has checked it. The chain is at the rear of the engine. A rudimentary visual check requires all the injectors to be removed to allow the cam cover to be lifted. Not a five minute job. Mercedes have a tool to replace the tensioner which is basically a gauge that measures the wear. Getting to the tensioner though is also a bit of work. Ask the question.

chain/tensioner failure of OM651 is pretty common and all points that direction here
