I've recently had problems with my gearbox always wanting to be in the wrong gear, and suffered fuel economy loss as a result. I've had the gearbox reset (Star)and software updated which made no difference.

After reading quite a few websites I think the torque converter is locking up, but yesterday it started to make a metal on metal noise, sounds awful and is audible at all speeds and is still there when coasting in neutral....any ideas folks?

There are plenty of other things it could be, it may not be the gearbox,,,its all encased.

This morning I had to take a customer to the airport, 50 miles. The noise is worse at slower speeds and I'm losing at least 10 mpg. Feels like I have the handbrake on.

It's definitely something to do with the box as when I put it into neutral the noise changes note slightly.

Also when I knock it out of gear from say 50mph the rpm drops from around 1700rpm to Idle (obviously)..but when I put it back into gear at the same speed the rpm will only reach 1100rpm....then with very gentle throttle the rpm will flick straight back up instantly. Is that normal?

I did not think it could be from within the box,,, not too bad a job doing the center bearing
