The other day I reset the trip mileage on my 33k miles E320 CDI when on the move. The mpg then showed 40.9 mpg. I've done it a couple of times since and the same number, 40.9 mpg came up. Obviously as you drive along a bit further the mpg changes but on each occasion it reset to 40.9 mpg.

Do you think this is indicative of the average mpg since the car ..... or has no relevance at all to this?

Just curious!

I have a feeling brian that this figure would be the mileage that the car was doing at the time as the car was mooving

Maybe so. Just a bit strange that on the 3 occasions I've done it, under different driving conditions, it's returned exactly the same number. However, thinking about it, your explanation, as ever, makes 100% good sense!

Brian, the 40.9mpg you see is the default figure programmed in. Why the figure is 40.9mpg I do not know.

When you start your engine, the trip computer shows zero miles but the car has consumed some fuel. At this rate the car is using an infinate amount of fuel per mile. If the display showed 0.0 mpg it would be true but the 40.9mpg looks better. So the options were to show nothing until the car moves or show a realistic starting figure, which is what they have done.

On my car the figure shown on start up is that recorded when it was switched off. It changes very quickly (within 100m) to the "real" value

mine starts at 40.9 too. It's normally down to 33 by the time I've backed out though.

Mine goes out backwards at 5.6 MPG:(

Maybe it's Mercedes Benz throwing out a challange...
"See if you can achieve this figure"!!!
My (petrol) Benz starts on (I think) 26.9 mpg and providing the traffic's not too heavy I can better this figure within a couple of miles.

Very Useful info. On long trips, my 320 CDi (w210) gradually climbs up to about 37 mpg over about 200 miles. I rarely get more, but I assume this must be over the whole trip so the actual running mpg must be better than 37 during the cruising parts of the trip. I also find that cruising at about 80-85 gives the best mpg - this seems very fast, you'd have thought about 50-60 would be better.
