I have recently purchased a ML320CDI 2008 and both wing mirrors hit on the respective doors when they are folding in. The mirrors are damaging the paint work on the doors. The MB dealer is telling me that I must purchase 2 new mirror frames as the swing cannot be adjusted.

There appears to be no damage to either mirror.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

If it was one, perhaps, but both?!? I doubt it.

Maybe they were replaced (possibly repainted) before you got it - I'd guess that someone has removed without taking note of where & how they fit then replaced both incorrectly

There is a ratchet aspect to these which allows them to fold if you get knocked - say by something coming the other way - they can then be reset (sounds awful as it does it) but sounds like the dealer isn't that up on the mechanism, so I'd get a second opinion before doing anything

Some thing odd on this, if the mirrors were knocked then they can only return to their correct place, there is nothing in WIS on this fault, could both frames be bent ?? it an odd one that just does not add up.

No sign of damage

Neither shows any sign of damage or marks.

Both mirrors when extended/out fit snuggly into the black seals.

I cannot understand while I have to change the mirror frames and are unable to adjust anything.

I have tried resetting by holding the mirror and pushing the activation button, this stops the mirror hitting until the next activation of the button. I have tried both at the start of the activation and placing something between the mirror and door. On the next activation the mirror hits the door.

I have been thinking, I wonder if it is possible to fit a stop on the mirror chassis. Is it the glass that hits the door going by your reset.

Could the mirror covers have been changed by a previous owner? Perhaps they are not OE?

Outer Mirror Unit

The bottom edge of the mirror outer plastic mirror cover case hits. It touches over a strip of about 20/25mm long.

Any adjustment made in the car only alters the glass, and not the case, could they be the wrong cases or the cases/complete mirror be fitted incorrectly. the 3 bolts that hold the mirror on are under the triangle cover that prises off from the top inside the car, are they loose.

This mirror cases appear to the correct type. Both units appear to be tight. No movement can be felt.

There is no gap between the mirror frame and the door.

What I was thinking was, 1mm out where the mirror is screwed on translates 5mm at the end of the mirror touches the door, a small washer between the rear screw could keep it away far enough. As there is no recorded info for this problem I would improvise.

I would try an impromptu fix too before I went and replaced the mirrors as a whole. You may be just spending money to end up with the same problem afterwards
