i recently had a problem with my 1999 c200 in that it was sounding rough when starting up and occasionally misfiring. so i went and bought some new coils but before i could change them the battery had gone flat. changed the battery but everything fine, but after a couple of days the battery was flat again, battery was recharged and when the car started up it sounded rougher then ever it is misfiring more often, the revs at idle start at about 900rpm then drop to about 600rpm when it starts spulttering etc. when i rev it in park sometimes it goes up to 3000rpm sometimes it doesnt go over 1000. i have changed the coils, plugs, and leads but it has made no difference. i disconnected the mass airflow sensor and all this does is cause the car to stall. has anyone got any ideas as to what is causing this and would it be connected to the battery going flat on a couple of occasions. many thanks

Sounds like the alternators diode pack or brush pack has worn out, 10 min job to remove the alternator, find a Bosch center near you and buy a new brush pack £30 roughly.

Also sounds like the Air flow meter has failed, get one fromt he Bosch center at the same time, dont buy a none Bosch meter as they dont work very well.

just looked on ebay and found a mass airflow meter sensor for £35.00 not very good with cars but it is the black tube that the plug fits into is this what i need or the actual sensor inside ie rectangular metal object

also check for splits in air intake pipe. anything like that between airmas meter and induction will render air mass meter useless .
