Just bought a 2000 ML CDI im very happy. However, When I Excellerate I can hear what sounds like a rush of air coming from the front left hand engine area :-(. I have had the hoses checked and all seems ok. The noise dies when cruising and there is no loss of power. The mechanic seemed a bit unsure and said it might be normal. IM sure it was not happening last week when I picked it up. Any body got any ideas.:idea:

Not heard of that one before. Be patient, and someone more wise than I will be along.

Thanks Jez, I might be getting paranoid. I might call into a Merc Dealership and ask for advice.Do you get any rushing sound from the left, Its not that unusual a sound. Its like a turbo however its not the usual whistling/whinning.

sound either like you have a hole or split in the intake system, hoses, intercooler or manifold valves.

Hi Paul and welcome. My C Class 270 CDi was recently in for an alternator replacement and the garage noticed a split in the housing that attaches to the front of the turbo, he asked me if i had heard a noise of 'rushing air' as this would have caused it. Cost £40. Must admit, didn't notice it before. Hope this helps.

Thanks to all. Took it to a Merc Garage today, The Mechanic didnt even need to listen, told me it was as suggested Hoses to the Intercooler or the intercooler itself. Although I will also mention the Hoses to the Turbo when I take it in. I will let you know how it goes. Cheers lads

never known a gasket to fail, those have o rings, check the valves in the manifold as these fail and fall out, the remainder fall in and sit on top of inlet valve. check the rod/bar that links them is not adrift.

Hi manifold gasket is going to be expensive Iv'e done this to my ML 270 it takes a long time to get all the bits of and clean de-coke everything and put back together at least 4 hrs even longer if its a good job.
I dont think its going to be the manifold gasget but I could be wrong
are you passing my way anytime (Blackburn area) I would take a look

Did this problem ever get fixed?

Hi, I have a 2001ML 270CDi that has just developed this exact same noise. I have no loss of power and assumed a split hose causing the noise. I would, however, expect a loss of power if the turbo system had a hole in it? Is it normal for them to continue with no loss of power but a rushing of wind noise comming through to the cabin?

My main question is, did you ever fix your problem, was it the inlet manifold gasket as suggested? was it an expensive repaire?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi

I have noticed over the past week the exact same noise on accelarations and a loss of power on my W209. 2.7 CDi. So I know I have a leak somewhere in the turbo circuit - i have a number of questions though...

1) What is the best way to debug this..
2) I seem to remember there was a good post on this site about taking the inlet manifold off the car, and cleaning everything. I ve just spent half an hour trying to find it... does anyone have the link?
3) Are any special tools needed? since I am dealing with the cold end of the engine it should all be straightforward/diy-able, or am I missing something?

... and to re-iterate on point number 1, there seems to be no room under the bonnet of the CLK - so my question really is where/how do i start looking. I believe that the turbo is on the nearside underneath all of the gubbings. Does anyone have a good diagram of this engine that I could follow?

to remove and refit the manifold will take 4 hours or more for an expert, and considerably more for a novice! this is actually a very tricky job indeed, and you will need knowledge, experience and tools aplenty.

ahhh - thanks for that Alex. I am hoping it is only a pipe that has split. Again, where do I start looking? Is it really as simple as listening for the whoosh sound?

Glad you got to the bottom of it. May i enquire as to how much it cost to rectify? Cheers, Colin.
