I have to confess to very limited technical knowledge! I have read a thread about "Kickdown Relays" (it was on an SL located behind the glove box)
My question is, my ML 270 has suddenly stopped kicking down, everything else works (Auto & TIPtronic) is there an "Obvious Fix" or do I need to spend hundreds having things checked at an MB main dealer?

First of all - Welcome to the Forum.

There are plenty of 'techy' people on this Forum who will be able to help you. I just drive them, sorry.!

Hi & welcome
what is the milage of you motor to start with

Also you say "do I need to spend hundreds"
your motor sound as if apart from the kick down it is ok
so you can thrash this fault to death here before you spend a penny
like JEZ.ML270 say plenty of 'techy' people

The first thing to check is the kickdown switch found on the floor directly under the throttle pedal, check that your carpet or rubber mat isnt preventing the pedal from travelling all the way down to the floor to operate the switch.

If that is ok then it could be the 'maf' which, if faulty, will cause the same problem.

As panosonic if the engine power is down, it will not kick down,,unplug the MAF and try the car

I've seen on may ml,s the throttle pedal breaks slighty where it attaches to the pedal. this means that the first 1-2cm of pedal travel doesnt pull the cable so you are allways 20% down on throttle response.

have a look the to top of the throttle pedal to see. its a posssiblity!!

Thanks

Thanks to you all! I think we are getting somewhere.
1. The Switch on the floor appears to be stuck down (It does not move up & down as I would expect a swith to? does this sound correct?
2. The pedal is very wobbly (left to right) and has been for a year so not sure if thats it but the white "loop" at the end of the cable does mean that you have to push the pedal 1/2 inch before it engages.

Finally what is a "MAF"??!!

Answers / suggestions to all the above would be greatly appreciated.

The white loop should have a small spring in it and it is that that sometimes breaks, is the spring still there.

If it is still there then open the bonnet and check the electric throttle actuator to the right of the coolant header tank.

Adjust the cable until there is no slack at all by winding the spindel. You wont get kick down untill full throttle is reconised by actuator.

No Spring

Ive Adjusted the cable under the bonnett (I'm quite impressed with myself now!) and that has certainly made acceleration more responsive (A good 5 turns to take up slack before the revs started to go up)

However, the spring you mention is missing and as I said the "Switch" that has been mentioned seems to be more like a grey plug on the floor, it does not move in or out?

What do you suggest about this spring and the switch?

I'm actually starting to enjoy this now! (Helped by the fact that it is looking less and less like a new gear box is required!!)

Well, i would get someone eles to sit in the car and give full throttle with the engine off, then check the actuator and make sure it is full throttle,
ie you cant move it by hand anymore, if its still not full throttle then a new cable is proberly required as a new spring isnt available seperately.

Having checked the russian parts site, it looks like the ml doesnt have a kick down switch on the pedal, so it is diffinatly a new cable required.

The ML does have a kickdown switch beneath the pedal.

Nope, it's a button, spring loaded 'clicker' switch !!

I cant see if any wires coming from it due to the tightly fitted carpet around it but if it was only a 'stop' why would it be spring loaded and give a very distinct 'click' each time i depress it....

Edit.........Just looked on the russian site for (ML 163) it would appear that you must have looked at the 'manual' transmission page...which, of course, doesn't have a kickdown switch! .....here is the link......item number 293 is the 'Kickdown switch'

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...GM=716.644&CT=F&cat=06H&SID=54&SGR=390&SGN=11

Are the two ML's you looked at in your workshop 'manuals'?

Photo

Hi

I hope I'm not causing trouble here!

Would it help if I took a photo of the "Stop / Switch"

There is definatly a grey thing on the floor under the pedal but it does not move or click. There are wires under the carpet next to this "Thing" but I can not see if they go into it?

I will get this thing sorted!

Thanks again

Not at all.

Take a picture of the pedal top and cable, i am sure yours is knackered, if it is then replace it and deal with the kick down switch next if that isn't cured as well.

The difference maybe facelift or something like that, as to why some have not and some have not got the button.
