My son in law is thinking about a ML amongst other 4WDs. He's not going to do too many miles, so fuel is not a particular issue. Any thoughts please.

Anyone with ML experience - good, bad or indifferent? :)

Hi tonybubble.
I have a 2002 facelift ML320 which I bought new. Most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. 103,000 miles to date and only failures have been heater recirculation pump (I put new brushes in it myself) and some of the wires in one of the folding mirrors have parted (doesn't bother me as I leave the mirror in one place). 19mpg in local driving. Very comfortable but not the most refined ride. The load space with the seats folded is vast and beats a large estate with the height available.
I have a feeling I will keep it till it dies!

Dreaming of a CL55k - one day maybe....
ML500 on LPG here.

I could spend ages telling you all the stuff, and if you want, PM me any questions BUT overall....

Pros :-

There is nothing else on the market that (for the money) will do the job that this car will do.

It will pull 3500kg
If you choose well, it will be LOADED with equipment
It will seat 7
It's very comfy on motorway / smooth a-road
It has the badge
It looks worth more money than it costs
The engine is superb, gearbox excellent (my 500 anyhow)
Cheap on LPG (wouldn't fancy it on petrol though)

Cons :-

Rusts worse than some other MB's (so yes that's bad bad bad)
Not built anything like as well as other MB's - rattles and squeaks happen and bits of trim break / fall off
It rolls a bit in bends (worse than X5 but no worse than Range Rover etc)
Rusts
Thirsty (although no worse than other v8 5.0 cars)
For a huge car, the interior space is surprisingly small, boot space not as good as a small estate car and rear seat room not that generous

I could go into more detail, but that's a decent summary - ask any more questions you want answers to.
