Hello,

I have a problem with my 2003 ML270.

I've just charged the battery as it has been sitting a while without any use.

The engine doesn't crank/turnover - I can hear a faint click within the engine bay as the key engages at maximum revolution.

The total mileage indicator indicates a code : 2 spanners followed by '316 D'

Any help/advice would be gratefully received !

Many thanks
Andy

Code doesn't mean a thing to me, are you sure your battery is charged, connecting a battery charger doesn't mean the battery has taken a charge.

Ahh not a code, it means your service is overdue by 316 days.

Yes - the battery has taken the charge - lights on and not dimming substantially when attempting to crank the engine. Any ideas how to continue ? Thanks.

I would suspect the battery to be u/s, especially if it has been stored for some time and in a discharged state then it is probably time to replace it. (storing a 'flat' battery will ruin it in a relatively short time)
Lights use little in the way of amps and are not a reliable indication of the state of the battery.
The 2 spanners indicate that the next due service is a 'major' one (1 spanner means a minor service)

Hi,

I tried the wipers and they were very slow.
Also, I gave it a jump and the engine did crank a few times - although it didn't start.
So , with the advice about stored flat batteries going bad - I think it's time for a new battery.
Many thanks to everyone for their help/advice !
Thank you.

Andy

Check the O/S earth strap from the engine mounting to body, used to cause this fault......

Andy

Jump starting with a bad battery on board won't work (as against a good but flat battery) , the bad battery acts like a resistor and simply soaks up the power from the good 'jump' battery which is why the engine didnt crank properly.
