Hi Guys,

I’ve got a problem with my ML270 2003.

Whenever I go out driving and then stop and turn off the car I have problems restarting it.

Specifically if I try to restart after about 5-10 minutes it seems to have the starter motor not disengage once engine kicks over but the after about 3 seconds of the starter still going it shuts down. When I try again after say this the engine won’t start (seems like no fuel?) until the engine bay cools down. (I have noticed the under hood temp does climb a little after engine shutdown and feel this may be related. ) usually it takes 30-45 minutes until it will start again normally.

Once engine has cooled to below 80 degrees and the engine bay has cooled down then it will start normally. I usually have to pop the bonnet to get the heat out of the engine bay.

I have noticed it goes into limp mode whilst driving but will only be for 5 minutes. I did see the EPC light on today (it is hidden on the dash by the hazards switch) so it might have been coming on before. My wife had said it has been going into limp mode, but if she turns it off and the straight on again it usually starts up again and out of limp mode. It has however on 2 occasions not started back up with the same symptoms I discussed above.

We changed the crank angle sensor thinking this was the problem, but still having the same issues.

Thanks in advance for any helpful hints or advice

Regards
Sean

Either failing crankshaft position sensor, or an injector/high pressure pump issue.

Check rail pressure when cranking. If high, but not high enough, do a leak off test to confirm which injector is leaking off the rail pressure
