Hi All,
I have a Mercedes ML270 CDI. I went to go away for the weekend with my family towing our caravan but we broke down within 20 miles of leaving home.
When towing the caravan my ML usually runs quite hot (about 90 degrees) but it was a very hot day and it quickly rose to 100 degrees, then the engine just cut out and refused to start. The engine would turn over but wouyld not fire. I let the vehicle sit for a while (While I waited for recovery truck) and tried it some 30 minutes later and it started no problem. I noticed that the temperature gauge had dropped to 80 degrees so after discussion with the recovery mechanic we set off again to try while he followed us a few miles. but sure enough after about 5 or 6 miles as the temperature rose to 100 degrees again the engine cut out. Whilst waiting the return of the tow truck I tried it several time but no joy until it reached 80 degrees and she burst back into life.
Does anyone have any ideas? does the engine have a thermal cut out to prevent engine damage from overheating? Is there some other electronic item that could be getting hot and causing this? The engine only runs hot when towing......any suggestions?
Please help I need to go away on holiday with the caravan for 3 weeks in July and I don't want to go through this again.
