Dear all, I hopeyou can help. I've got a 2000 ml 270 auto/tiptronic. Only today the wife brought it back after the school run and said that it has lost power. What's happening is that when you pull off it goes up the box no probs, but when you go up a gradient it just dies and does not change down. Also the kickdown doesn't. If I push the stick across to tiptronic manual it's fine. But in either mode it won't rev over 3000rpm. Then all of a sudden it's fine again for a few minutes, then loses it again. Any ideas please.

Sounds like safe mode symptoms, only it shouldn't come back to normal without a restart.
Do you have to restart it before it behaves properly again?

By far the most common cause of safe mode is the Mass Air Sensor (there's a sticky thread on this subject).
However, there are several other causes of such faults. Often the cheapest way long term is to get the diagnostic codes read. The unwillingness to kick down and 3000rpm revs would imply that the ECU has detected something.

My sis in law got the same problem with her 270. its a 6 speed manual but seems to be more restricted by speed, never gets over 40mph.
If she turns off and restarts its ok for weeks
Needless to say shes never had it looked at cos its never actually stopped yet... hey ho

Like to hear if anybody got the answer

Thanks To Both. It Does Right Itself Temporarily On Stopping And Restarting But Then Goes Again.
