Sounds like limp mode. Causes can vary. Common one is egr not operating properly and another one is swirl flaps not working properly. Either can cause limp mode and certainly will cause excess black smoke. Also check for split boost hose - usually can hear some hissing from the split.

discovered that the injectors were blowing carbon past. Would this cause loss of power or limp mode??

THanks

No. You have some other issue that is causing limp mode. Could be anything from a MAF sensor to a knackered manifold. You need a STAR test to see what fault codes are stored and actual value function will tell you what components are doing what and if they are operational.
