My 2006 ml280 started yesterday but a red warning came up on my instrument cluster stating that ‘drive to workshop without changing gear’ I had to go to work so turned off the ignition and got a taxi. Today I have got in the car and tried to start it but now it won’t even start, can anyone help me out with some advice??

Started my 2006 ml280 yesterday morning after being parked over night when I got into the car there was a bleeding noise with a red warning on the instrument cluster saying drive to workshop without changing gear. The engine would start but the car would not come out of park, I switched off the ignition and got a taxi to work. Today I tried the car again and now the engine won’t even start but it is still bleeping with the warning coming up?

I’m not entirely sure, I’ve not long bought the car but all has been fine the past few months! Is it possibly a battery issue?

They don't like bad batteries and its a relatively cheap fix if it is a battery - measure the voltage - 12.6V with everything off is what you want

I’m not very mechanically minded hence why I have posted here before I Go along the route of getting it recovered to a garage, I will pick up a voltage meter tomorrow and check. Is it the main battery or the aux battery I should be checking or even both?

Main battery - under the drivers seat.

or try to get voltage from service menu, worth buying a volt meter anyway.

  • Turn ignition on, do not start engine
  • From mileage screen press “R” 3 times quickly to show voltage screen.

Ok when I do that it reads 11.7v, the engine is starting but when I get out and lock the car the mirrors are making a lot of noise when folding in as if they don’t have a lot of power getting to them if that makes sense?

Sounds like a weak battery. A good charge overnight should help.

You can charge using the 2 terminals under the bonnet on drivers side. Red plastic cap on positive.
