Hi,
New to this forum and hoping to find an answer to some annoying issues with my recently purchased 99 ML430 with 63,000mls on it.
Seems to be very temperamental with regards to acceleration and shifting.
I drive 11 miles each way to work in it everyday, some mornings I can hit the accelerator from the lights and leave everything in my mirror. Pulls really strong, all the way to 6000rpm where it will shift and keep pulling like a train.
Yesterday I was left behind by a woman in a Vauxhall Meriva, it accelerated very slowly and seemed to have no power and sat at 6000rpm until eventually it shifted 2 gears but had almost no throttle response (even less than it normally has !!) Today, pulling away from the lights it suddenly died at 4000rpm then came back then died etc. Up to 4000rpm seems sluggish but ok so when I got to work I opened the hood and tried revving it up.
Sure enough it cuts out at 4000rpm but nothing happens for the first say 20%of accelerator pedal travel ,then the engine will suddenly play catch up. There is a really big lag. MPG seems to have dropped too, especially on the motorway, where I got 23mpg indicated at 65 now I am showing 17mpg.
Plugs and fuel filter were replaced at 50000mls according to service book, I cleaned air filter and did oil change with Mobil 1 recently.
Sorry for the long winded post but as an aircraft engineer I've found the more info u can give with faults the easier the diagnosis.

Thanks for any pointers or info

(just read post saying E240 cuts out @4000rpm to protect engine in neutral, is that the same with ML? )

More for a 430 more like £250 but agree its sounds like air flow meter.

tried to clean it

Thanks for the pointer guys, after reading loads of posts about the MAF I decided to have a go cleaning it. Took it out of the inlet and cleaned it with a video head spray cleaner, didnt look dirty, and nothing came out so I re-installed it. On another forum I read about ALTERATIONS ? where the ECU stores driving patterns and if u drive slow all the time the ECU thinks u dont need all the power. So to clear them I disconnected the battery for 20 mins, reconnected, turned ignition on and left it for 30 seconds. Then without touching the throttle I started it. It revved up to 1500rpm, then hunted and coughed and spluttered for 3-4mins. OH crAP i thought, i broke it. then it settled down to a nice 500rpm idle. (Thinking afterwards, my ferrari does the same when I turn the battery on once a week to run it, that is a Bosch LE jetronic system so maybe similar)
Anyway, I drove off and now it is worse, with gentle acceleration it is fine, but put your foot down and NOTHING, worse than before. Some posts I read said it takes time for ecu to learn new reading, and may be a while till I see better response, Is this correct. Should I just bite the bullet and buy a new MAF ?

You really need to have the car put on a diagnostic machine and get ur fault codes read..no doubt the maf will now show up as you have tinkered with it..your car (V8?) has a lot of things ..camshaft sensors..coil packs..leads, plugs..cats..so really its a job for a reality genius..the computer..

I assume the MAF was connected to the car when the battery was reconnected, Ive seen MAF's fail just by reconnecting a battery.

Maf's do not always clean as the sensor can go out of spec.

My V70R went down and it runs fine un plugged.

You can unplug yours and if the car runs much better then it is the MAF.

Do bare in mind that the other guy whos car get back to normal had fitted a new one

Thanks for all your advice guys, I'm off to a local independant MB specialist
just 4 miles from where I work tomorrow. Will have them put it on a code reader and also have them do a gearbox oil and filter change, as they advised for an ML with my mileage, it has been shifting strange of late.
Will post what they find.....

By the way, I did unplug the MAF when the car was idling, made no difference at all....one post I read said it should run rough and lumpy.

It's Fixed.

Took car to local independant MB garage this morning.
Picked it up at 17.30 having had the AT box serviced (flush, filter, new fluid), AC checked for not working (purge, leak check and refill), ECU codes read, confirming duff MAF and new MAF from MB installed.
Total was 540 GBP, but the car now goes like stink, changes perfectly and is icy cold.
Last faults on printout showed:

SELF ADAPTATION OF PARTIAL LOAD MIXTURE TO LEFT BANK

SELF ADAPTATION OF PARTIAL LOAD MIXTURE TO RIGHT BANK

SELF ADAPTATION OF ILDE MIXTURE FORMATION TO LEFT BANK

SELF ADAPTATION OF ILDE MIXTURE FORMATION TO RIGHT BANK

SELF ADAPTATION OF ILDE MIXTURE FORMATION TO LEFT BANK TO LIMIT OF ME-SFI CONTROL MODULE ( N3/10 )

SELF ADAPTATION OF ILDE MIXTURE FORMATION TO RIGHT BANK TO LIMIT OF ME-SFI CONTROL MODULE ( N3/10 )

OXYGEN SENSOR ON LEFT DOWNSTREAM OF TWC ( G3/5 )

START ATTEMPTED WITH LOCKED DAS, B: CAN FROM DAS MODULE TO
ME-SFI CONTROL UNIT ( N3/10 ) DAMAGED, C: ME-SFI CONTROL MODULE AND DAS CONTROL MODULE DO NOT MATCH

Garage is S&R Motors, Formby, Merseyside. I'm happy with the service and the price.

all the above results you would expect from from an airmass sensor, fair price as well!!!!! makes a change to see a good result for once!!!!
