Just a quick question, what rules must you fulfill to qualify for the 30 year anti corrosion warranty from Mobilolife?

There seems to be a bit of an unwritten rule regarding rust, which you'll find many threads on this board about. If your car is over 8 years old, then you'll have trouble regardless of fmbsh, less than 8 years old, fmbsh seems to help, but its not certain!

My car from new has been serviced by an Indie, but in its latter years has been serviced at European dealers. Consequently, when I took it in for rust, MBUK said no, Daimler AG said yes and the rust was fixed. Some more rust has sprung up on the tailgate and now MBUK has said yes to this, so its quite difficult to guage. Probably if you spend money at a dealers from time to time, they look favourably on you! Shouldnt really have rust on the marque of car, but 1998 onwards, you could well find you have it.

The 30yr rust warranty only applies if the car is rusting from the INSIDE OUTWARDS,i asked mb last week about this, they said 3yrs manu warranty, 8yrs good will must have been serviced by mb dealer, 30yrs inside to OUTfor rust and they must send a inspector with special equpmnt to check the car.

The 30 yr warranty must have unbroken MB dealer history for cars to 04. Post 04 you can re-instate it by having 1 dealer service. This cover then lasts until the next service is due. The same applies to the 30yr breakdown cover.
It is true to say that the warranty is for inside out corrosion. A grey area is corrosion from under the paint as affected 1998-2002 cars. Post 04 all mbs were galvanised so under paint corrosion is no longer an issue and presumably this is why the pre/post 04 rule changes were introduced. For pre-04 cars the 8yr rule comes in so 2001 cars should be ok but you may struggle to get foc repairs on a non historied '98 car.

Can someone help me with this a little.

I have an 02 registered C Class Sports Coupe which is showing signs of rust around all 4 wheel arches. The rust is clearly coming from the inside out - and the chap at my local MB dealer agreed that it wasn't due to perforation.

The vehicle has 5+ years MBSH and then the previous owner got 2 services done at a private garage. I bought the car 2 months ago.

I've just had my claim for rust repair rejected by MB UK on the grounds that there is only a 3 year warranty "on these vehicles" and that anything else is strictly a "good will gesture".

Since I have only very recently bought the vehicle, MB consider that the price I paid would have included an adjustment for the presence of rust and hence I am not due any goodwill from MB.

They have flat out stated that there is no warranty beyond 3 years for rust on my vehicle. They say that this is the information they have received from MB UK in Milton Keynes and have given me the switchboard number for MK so I can confirm it with them.

How valid is their statement? What should I do next?

Incidentally, this is Hughes of Beaconsfield who were handling this. They did something similar to my in-laws S-plate E class - flat out denied any liability - my in-laws contacted MB in Germany and got the whole thing sorted (through a very grudging Hughes).

Before I go wading in down the same path, is this valid in my case?

Well, The 2 indie services effectively invalidated Mobilio and as you've just bought it they have a point about the price and knowing about it, so they are probably right about the 'goodwill' aspect. That said, there is a fair bit of lattitude I believe, lots based on how hard the dealership is prepared to argue with them. I got a big contribution to a repair, partially because the dealer said to MB that "I am a good customer, so is my Dad and they don't want to upset us.". Hey presto - MB coughed up 70%.
It does sound like this garage isn't prepared to fight the customer's corner so maybe the first step is to try a different dealership and explain your plight, that you want to use them for servicing but have been treated shabbily in your view by their competitor. Would they like your business?

Is it legal for the indie services to invalidate the Mobilio, though?

I thought that one was at liberty to use any garage - not just franchise dealers - so long as they carried out services using parts of equivalent spec to the official ones?

Is that not the case for Mobilio?
