I notice that a lot of people post a thread and refer to their 2001 "W210 estate" or something like that, without actually saying, my 2001 E Class W210 or something. So I get to think, should I know what all the numbers are, or should I have to decode each one by looking it up everytime someone refers to their car by this number? I feel quite inadequate when I see such a post and don't know what car they're on about.

So is there any particular reason why people don't actually say what car it is they're talking about?

When looking for a fault all of the above numbers are next to useless for me, there are 9 variants of the 210 so I always have to ask for the VIN

I often get confused too. 208, 171 etc I'm never clear on. I only know the C and E as I've had them. The problem is that when people go the other way and say 2002 E class , it could be a 210 or a 211 so you can't win. Then of course there's the macho side - "Surely you know what an R171 is?!!"
err actually I've forgotten again! (SLK is it?)

Personally I just remember that my E430 is a W210 - which if I remember rightly is the first 4 digits of your VIN. The next 3 I think refer to the variant.

Brief point - Technically it's an S210. You don't then even have to say estate, since S210 is the correct model code - for a (deep breath) "4 headlamp E Class estate built from '96 (but not the 124 series with square lamps which overlapped into that year and ain't such a ruster) up to whenever it was the 211 came out"...phew.

But no-one knows what you're on about, hence most peeps say W210 estate.

I think you should absolutely fine about not knowing all the numbers - maybe I need to get out a bit more and not be such an anorak:D

Special spotter prizes for knowing all the engine model numbers?!? Actually I don't know mine is it a 111!?...panic!!
