Is there anything to stop you taking out one of those private car warranties for around £250 knowing that something is going to be required on your car in the near future. Apart from being morally wrong and that you'll end up in hell with Jade Goody and her mother is it not just a prudent way of playing the system ? I might require a steering rack as mine is squealing so this might be the sensible option - feel free to crucify me ;)

I reckon these companies would have it tied up so tightly you'd be lucky to squeeze a penny out of them.

I actually agree with you but how could they not pay up ?? If you take out the policy (some even cover wear and tear items), run with it for a few months then then fire in claim then their beat - surely ??

Yes you'll probably get away with it. Obviously if they find out you'll be up for insurance fraud and all that implies but you pay your money etc.
I'll admit to buying a car with a cracked sceen, waiting a couple of months and banging in a claim. Few of us are totally innocent and when money is tight, needs must...

Yes got you .. JBerks, I'm arresting you for insurance fraud, any thing you say wil be taken .....;)

Seriously, though my sqeaking steering has spooked me a bit and I think I need a bit of security. I don't fancy paying in excess of a grand for a new steering rack although it might just end up a £1.50 can of WD40 fix

If that's all they get me on, I'll be quite happy!
Anyway, hopefully the WD40 will do it, but as I said earlier, mine needed a new rack....

These warranties are useless. They'd just get out of it.

Remember, warranties are offered to make a profit for that company. They're not there to make a profit for you.

My thoughts entirely.

Have a look at warranty direct I can't see how they could get out of it when wear and tear items are even covered. Take out a policy wait a 3 or 4 months, then claim (if you need to) for the life of me I can't see a get out clause.

There will be one.

There's probably some small print that says "Warranties Direct can refuse to pay out for any reason we want. All claims will not be honoured"

Good warranties do not make a profit by not paying out. Any more than good insurance companies for cars do. They make a profit by charging a bit more for the cover than it costs to provide ON AVERAGE. Some claim more than the policy cost them, some claim less, but on average the policy costs a bit more than the average payout. We buy insurance for peace of mind and because we do not want large unexpected bills.

Similarly, I am happy to pay a small profit to the insurance companies to cover my house, rather than risk a very large bill if it burned down.

The real questions are: are you choosing a good reputable warranty scheme (ask What Car or Which?),
and will they check your car over before agreeing to warrant it. If they do and they accept it, there is no fraud on your part.

We all get taken - hopefully not more than once in a lifetime. I bought a 124 300td estate several years ago ( first of many) which had been clocked. I was disappointed when I saw the car but I'd travelled a long way, it had the leazther and all the biz - AND it came with a warranty.
When the engine failed and revealed the car's true mileage, the warranty was invalid ( because the mileage was wrong and the garage hadn't kept up the payments on the policy!)
By the time I sued the bastard of course he'd gone bust. So much for warranties.
