What started out as a central locking problem in my C180 2001 now has me more confused, frustrated and lighter in the pocket.I couldnt access the car.Called out mechanic opened doors with keys, alarm didnt sound, battery was flat.Checked key fobs,ok.Put in a new car battery ev thing worked fine for a few days. Then came out in the morning key wouldnt suck in to ignition,no display lit up on dash,,nothing!Came back to car an hour later opened door, dash panel lit up,key was accepted ignition started. Came out last few mornings, some mornings no problem, some repeat of the above.Usually only a problem in the mornings.Usually by a few hours later all is fine again. Can access and start car all day after initial difficulty overcome.Checked battery for drain,ok!
Would anyone have any thoughts?Similar problems?

It's not unknown for the lock to fail to accept the key. I had it a couple of times on my old E. I simply removed it and replaced it a couple of times and it started working again. Then it was fine for months. Probably dirt in the contacts in the switch. Officially you'd need a new barrell assembly (£lots) but I understand many people have has success stripping down the assembly and cleaning the contacts in theirs.

I suspect the battery problem was genuine and you needed one so you haven't actually wasted anything.

Morning sickness?

Thanks for this.
Can you advise if there is much involved in stripping the barrel assembly.Too much for a novice.? Anything
Would this problem with barrel assembly affect gaining access to the car with (either of)the fobs.
The dealers have quoted me £550-£600 for a new ignition switch/keys etc, car will be in garage for about 3/4 days.
Would consider options before following this up.
Thanks again for taking time to respond.

Morning sickness

I have tried insertng and removing key as suggested. No luck.
Any one got any ideas before I finally surrender and go to the dealer to give him £lots, here goes to summarise problem as best as possible!!
Despite working fine for afew mornings after changing the car battery last week, over last few mornings wont accept key again in ignition (nor will the central locking work off the key/fob(batteries in fob tested red lites ok).i dont lock car doors overnite in case i am locked out altogether.Periodically throughout the day I open car door, if display on dash lites up I know car will start, if not no joy?Eventually at some point in the day, display will lite and key will be accepted and car will start. After this the central locking will work and car will continually accept key in the ignition and start for remainder of day,........ until the next morning when problem starts all over again!!!!!
? Jberks has suggested stripping down assembly, cleaning contacts, any advice how this is done?
As it is a morning problem would o/nite damp?? be a possible factor, anything I could check?
Any thing considered?
Thanks
