MOT Extension

May sound obvious to those in the know, but I never even considered it. Just had my wife's car in for a service and asked them to do an MOT as it had expired, and when I went to collect it, it was not done. I asked why and they said it wasn't due, so checked the government MOT checker site and found that they have actually rolled the MOT Due date forward 6 months.

I assumed, perhaps foolishly, that when they said MOTs were extended by 6 months for Covid-19, that you just had some leeway - I didn't realise they'd actually moved all the dates forward on their systems.

I think they’re just rolling them forward six months as they expire, until we get back to (new) normal

... and found that they have actually rolled the MOT Due date forward 6 months. ....

My Smart's MOT was rolled on to Nov from mid May .... it's booked in now though for the morning

because your car's MOT is now where near its expiry date .....

My Roadster's MOT was due to run out on 30th May but it's already been extended to 30th Nov

My local garage is still open so no issues getting MOT's done

But not all MOT stations are The two I normally use are both shut.

Right now 26/05 the MOY site says "There is a problem with this service.....blah blah try again later" so presumably they are rolling dates. I think both our MOTs are due in March so presumably we won't get an extension.

They get extended around 5 days before expiry date. There's a bit of concern that there might not be much notice of the scheme ceasing.

It doesn't make much difference but be aware that if you still want to get your MOT done, if it's done once it's been extended then you'll only get 12 months MOT, you lose the "grace" days. It's only a few days loss, but if you're OCD about the date it's due you might be miffed!

Smart was due 31st March so no extension
It was booked in but couldn’t get it done because of the lockdown.

SLK due next month, I’ll see if it gains 6 months. If it does I’ll not get it MOT’d until the new due date - well I know it’s just been serviced

XC90 is due its first MOT by 31st May, Booked in for that and annual service this Friday so let’s see if it happens

We stopped MOT,s here in FEB for 6 months because of the broken lift fiasco in test centres. Another 6 months was added because of covid. which brings our car a whole year without an MOT Like most in NI. I am looking after our car and my van well but there will be some death traps on the road this winter.

My A200 was due MOT on 7th April, then it was pushed to 7th October, and was showing as such on all the usual sites and apps, including check-mot.service.gov.uk and Vehicle Smart app.

As I had it done on the 21st of May, it now shows (again everywhere) a new expiry date - 20th May 2021.

Being of a very trusting nature, I took screenshots at every stage

Pretty impressive they didn't mess this up
