My CL close to 30MPG when on cruise control set at 65, today not much above 9, the needle was firmly buried on the 0 on the ecometer at 145.

At the end of the day.its only the difference in the fuel consumption from your old CE on average miles that will be about £300 per year, I cant think of anything else in life that can give the same pleasure as a CL500.

On a similar theme, I'm considering buying a 2001 CL500: what sort of fuel consumption am I likely to get? It will mostly be used for motorway driving, with the odd rural B-road dash.

Still, when buying something like that servicing costs and fuel are always going to be more expensive.

If running costs are your primary concern then by a nissan micra. Thats why my wife has one and I have an E430, although it does smart when filling it up, at least I'm not doing 1000 miles a week at the moment!

I would think 25-30 once your use to playing with it...

I'm averaging 25mpg out of my bus, My dad has a SL500 and he gets over 28mpg regularly.

For a big engine / car thats pretty good going

I think a CL will be heavier on fuel than an SL, I would expect it to be a lot heavier. In these big motors its all about usage and the weight of your right foot. In my S320 petrol I can get 30+ on a gentle motorway run and 15 around town. MrsC get 35+ with gentle motorway usage to work in her SLK230, but we got 18 on our first weekend away in it when we bought it, however we did get upto 140mph through north wales which may have effected the final result.

As some one has already said you dont buy a CL500 for its fuel economy!

Th fuel consumption figures mentioned actually sound pretty good - I was concerned that a CL500 might be as bad as some of the old V12 Jags I used to drive - rarely got above 15mpg. To put this into perspective, I had a test drive of a new Suzuki Swift GTi recently (son fancies one): 1.6 engine and weighs about the same as a packet of crisps and still struggles to better 30mpg in everyday driving.

Dont compare this with the old jags, the 4.2 were bad, all 50 that I had were bad
