Car in question is a CLK 230K.

The other day I was driving 40 MPH and the car just spluttered to a halt, I pulled to the side of the road and It wouldnt start again, so I got towed home.

After leaving it overnight it started the next morning, but Idled very roughly, When I revved it a little it just cut out, I took it for a drive, Sometimes its fine and pulls well, others it goes very limp, revs drop, or the engine just stalls.

Also when the car is running there is a whining noise coming from the rear of the car (Fuel pump perhaps?) This noise is always there and I have never heard it before until the car stopped on me that day.

There are no warning lights on the Dash.

Please could I have some help, I dont want to have to sell her for scrap.

Thank you.

I am sure that this is the MAF going down,,I think that it is just behind the rad on the air intake box.

Replace it. Not sure of the price, but it should be less than £50 and available from Ebay. Fitted by you in 10minutes.

It will cost you more money for your garage to diagnose and even more again to replace it.. So my advice as someone who replaced it and was amazed at the difference, just do it. It may not be (But probably is) the solution, and, if it isn't it will be the cheapest misdiagnosis you will ever have :)

Hope you save the old girl.

As I need to use the Car to get to work tomorrow, And I dont think any of my local parts shops stock it, I will have to get one off eBay, While im waiting for that to arrive, Is there anyway I can clean out the MAF with something ?

Not sure if that would fix it temporarily or not at all ? If it would do a quick fix, what should I clean it out with ?

In many cases the car will run near normal, do warm up the engine , then unplug it and see if you have near on full power back again, this does work on many cars

It will do no harm at all,,it just sets up the sensors for the correct mixture,,idle may be difficult from cold but try it

Ok, Ive just looked under my bonnet to find actually where it is, From looking at pics on the netof the MAF, Its not near the air box, as you look at the car, it is just behing the radiator on the left hand side, attached below runs a metal pipe which vanishes to the left somewhere and attached on top of it is a plastic pipe which connects to something on top of the engine, am I looking in the right place?

(I know my mechanical descriptions arnt up to much)

Just checked the part number against a listing and I am looking at the right part which is a good start !

So if I just unplug this, and leave it unplugged ill be able to use my car tomorrow morning ? (With it having a rough idle?)
