Hi all,

I have a few questions on my year 2000 W210 E240 avantgarde. The VIN no. is wdb2100622b190932.

1) What is the engine capacity, 2398cc or 2598cc? How to find out?

I am currently facing two problems with the car.

1) Multifunction steering buttons, 8 LED unable to light up when headlamp is turn on.
2) Intermittently heard the ‘clunk’ sound when go over road bump with relatively fast speed. No sound produced when speeding less than 10km/h over road bump.

Here is the repair I have done, after I bought this car few months back.

1) Replaced faulty MAF.
2) Replaced tensioner Pulley.
3) Replaced thermostat.
4) Replaced faulty meter cluster. The used meter cluster came from another W210 from Japan; it contained Japan language and English only. Is this the root caused of LED is unable to light up? All the functions of the multi-function steering are still working fine.

Hope to receive some valuable advice from this forum.

Thank you.

Hi and welcome.
CC wise, your log book should say (do you have such a thing where you are - I assume you're not uk? Australia?). There are tell-tales such as from memory the 2.4 has a square 'avantgarde' label on the top of the gear lever and the 2.6 one runs down the back, plus one or two other minor facelifts that they did at the same time. Alternatively, put your VIN into the Russian site (lots of posts with the url)

You confused me on the LEDs (210s only had LEDs in the mirrors)- they are the LCDs clock and temp displays I assume?
The root cause of them failing is a ribbon cable connection under the display units. These can be fixed for £150 or so, or DIY if you're a little braver. Quite a simple job though. I couldn't say why they don't work on the new cluster but the cluster may need to be programmed to the car if it's not already.

Whats the problem with the wheel buttons? Again, if they aren't working since the dash replacement - I'd go for a reprogram.- either at an indie Merc specialist or a dealer.

I'll leave the clunk t someone who knows the suspension better than me. (Never had a problem with that area on mine).

Hello Jberks,

Thank you for your warm welcome. I appreciated that a lot. By the way, I am from Malaysia (nearby Singapore).

Unfortunately, when I purchased it from the previous owner, I didn’t see any service log book or any car manual around. The reason why I confused over the engine capacity is that 2 different workshops telling me different story. First workshop stated it is 2398cc and the other told me it should be 2598cc. Both workshops equipped with STAR!! I am really confused.

I visited the Russian site (http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb.asp) but the data sheet didn’t tell the exact engine capacity. Maybe I miss it somewhere, please provide me with some clues. Oh, now I know that my car came from UK. Hope it is not used as a taxi before.

By the way, when I open the steering wheel airbag cover, I saw 2 wires connected to the airbag. There were 3 wires connected to the multifunction steering button together with 8 LED (I assumed they were LED, because they don’t looks like bulb). I wonder how these 3 wires is able to control LED illumination plus a lot more other commands that control the radio, telephone, navigation? It must be link to the computer to achieve all these complicated tasks. I wonder why these 3 wires are well working fine with all the other functions and yet did not illuminate the 8 LEDS. It really frustrated me. I guess it could be due to the meter cluster I replaced is not from the UK region. May I know is there any different between W210 meter cluster in JAPAN & UK? They look exactly the same except the languages.

Hope to see more reply.

Thank you.

Interesting thread, my friend has just bought a W210 its dash has a few pixels missing, i believe a common fault with the ribband wires, so how do you fix it, replave the individual wires of the ribband ?
Lots of places advertising this service just curious whats involved
many thanks

Need Help (My First Merc)

Hi Wireman,

Thanks for your reply.

It's the driver site that produced the 'clunk' noise. My mechanic unable to trace the source of this sound. He had replaced linkage (r.l) 2 pcs, STC boot 2 pcs, Inner tie rods 2 pcs, Outer tie rods 2pc, Upper control arm, stabilizer Bush 5 months ago.

Thank you.

Need Help (My First Merc)

Hello Alancee,

Sorry for the delay response and thanks for the information given. In fact, I left the office already and unable to access internet at home.

Indeed, never knew that xx0622b indicate 2.6 cc, Cool!

By the way, my meter panel temp display, milleage display and the clock display works perfectly. I can also command the Radio/CD Changer via steering wheel buttons without any problem. Just wondering how come the 8 LED not lighted up after replaced the meter got from the JAPAN W210.

You are right that one must be very careful not to release the airbag during opeining up the air bag cover. Touch wood, I am safe this time around.

Salute to you on your soldering skill to solve your ribbon cable contact problem. I indeed spoiled my ribbon cable and therefore left no choice to purchase another used meter panel. The bad thing was I cannot purchase the ribbon cable in Malaysia. Otherwise, I can fix it with no problem.

Thanks anyway.

a yr2000 E240 could be a 2.4 or a 2.6 (mine was a 2.4).
It was changed during a minor facelift in 2000 I believe. The old one (mine) had a square metal elegance/avantgarde badge in the centre of the gearstick. The facelift ones has a label that ran fron the top, down the back of the knob like the current design (211 etc).
There was something else too .....
Ah yes - adjustable steering wheel
It was an option pre facelift (2.4) and standard on the facelift (2.6).
So, if you don't have an adjustable wheel and have a square decal in the gear knob, it's almost certainly a 2.4.
