Hi All

I have a '97 230SLK. It has the standard speakers obviously, but with limited space in these cars I was wondering what I could buy to have extra volume. Unfortunately i'm one of those who like my music as loud as possible.

I am not sure if the Bose system was ever offered to the SLK, perhaps your only choice is to go to a specialist ICE

You may want to consider an easy upgrade, i.e.better speakers powered by a decent amp. Nice easy way to start, then you can go mental from there as I always seem to!

These are very hard cars to upgrade the Loudspeakers on.

Would they be more difficult than my SL300? Totally ignorant on the SLK, is it the size of the speakers or the access? At the end of the day anything is possible, as always it is how much your budget stretches.:(

Yes,the size is one thing, the impedence another at 1 ohm, so what ever you do, it must all be changed at the same time. I thought about changing my 129 SL speakers, but gave up.

I'm about to do mine. 16.5 cm JL AUDIO components in the doors with DYNAMAT mountings. AMP- PHEONIX GOLD 2 channel, circa 2x80W. Adding a wee Alpine active sub behind the seat for some enhanced bass. Already fitted an Alpine head unit. All being installed professionally, worth the money I find.

My advice would be

decent branded head unit with high (4x50 watt) min

upgraded speakers in doors (normally rated double RMS power of amp)

replace speaker cable

install sound deadening material on doors (basically where speakers are) (this really works)

I recommend Alpine equipment. see there website www.alpine-europe.com

I have done this on my Benz E class - its a world apart from the norm.

and yes if i play it loud my ears hurt - great stuff :)

you think you're limited to room, try kitting out a sound system in a Vito!! i would like to have had a nice twin sub enclosure, ( i might have an empty load area, but i cant use that, as i need to carry goods) managed to play about and get an half decent bit of kit in the cab area anyway, got 2 X 450W, 6.5" 3-way speakers in the doors, 2 X 500W 6x9 4-way speakers in the rear ply lining, and a 400W amp behind my seat driving a 10" 400W sub which i had to modify to fit in the void beneath my seat, doesn't sound too bad at all, considering

Eh....What....speak up young man.

On the sprinter I relaced the flimsy lower door trim/document store panel and fitted copies made of 40mm MDF into which I fitted 2 Pioneer 17cm speakers into each panel (4 speakers in all). These together with a 4 x 50w head unit gives enough oomph to deafen me. When I get out of the van I have trouble hearing my customers. A nice bit of Chilli Peppers gets the right foot working over time!
