just a query in regards to driving automatic, when you slow down being in a high gear does the gears drop down to mirror the speed ,I've just bought one and I'll go down to 20mph whilst still in 7th gear then struggle to get the power , spoke to the garage an he said it's normal with mercedes, is this the case ?

Hello and welcome,

It should go down the box - are you using it in manual mode?

No it's in automatic, it's sluggish, had it 2 weeks an had the engine light came on after 4 days , the garage said it probably because it's been off the road and reset the warning light , not great on cars but this doesn't feel good

Something definitely sounds wrong. Modern cars don’t do well sitting around on forecourts and imo, once a battery is low requiring a boost, it’s best replaced for new one, regardless of age and make of car.

All my fleet even back to 1995 is auto and none are sluggish. The autos do drop down to the correct gear, can’t say I’ve noticed the changes down (never paid attention) plus the boxes are smooth but, certainly when coming off the brakes and back onto the gas, the gear is always correct, power is there and nothing to cause concern.

Consider getting a second opinion from an MB specialist or main dealer before going back to the garage otherwise you will be get fobbed off.

Even in manual mode our CL will drop down gears when slowing - is this not the same on all models?

As all of the above this doesn't sound right. Seventh gear usually means that you're travelling at legal limits for A roads or motorways. When pulling up the gearbox should change down, often depending on how hard you're braking.
The gearboxes adapt to your driving style so if you brake consistently brake hard then the gearbox will drop down gears faster so that you have additional engine braking. If you tend to brake gently then it will hang onto the higher gears for longer - often they will skip gears say 7th then 4th as you brake from 70 to 30mph.
If you suddenly depress the accelerator hard then there can be a slight delay whilst it determines the best gear to change down to - unless you depress the accelerator pedal all the way and trigger the kick down switch.

Running the gearbox in 'C' (comfort/economy) higher gears will always be preferred by the gearbox; S (sport) mode the gearbox will prefer lower gears and select gears faster than when in C.

How do the different modes compare on your car?

An engine management warning light would be a concern for me, even if the garage reset it. Did they say what fault code had caused it?

Under UK law, within the first 30 days you have a right to reject a car if it is deemed to be of unsatisfactory quality, which currently it would not appear to be from your description.
