Hello everyone!
I'm getting a 99 E240 elegance tmrow and I'm really looking forward to it. After a year with a Jag XJ8 my enthusiasm for cars has wained a little. I'm just hoping the Merc will prove to be a better buy than the Jag was, coz the ****** thing has caused me nothing but grief for the 12 months Ive owned it.

What's the difference between the Elegance and the Kompressor?

Cheers

Nick

I've just been doing a search on E240. I think I'll have a good check round it for rust tmrow before I hand over the cash!!! :-o I never even thought to check for rust on a Merc!
It has got a full MB service history though so it should be covered right?

Personally, I'd steer clear of the W210 E class due to the rust issues. However, if you are set on the car, It will be covered under mobilolife as long as it has FMBSH.

You're going to notice a hell of a performance difference between an XJ8 and an E240!
FYI the Kompressor is a supercharger - so not available on the 240. The models are Elegance (luxury), Avangarde (sport) and classic (base).
The 240 is a 2.4 V6 - the E200 Kompressor is a 4 cylinder 2 litre supercharged. - similar performance but the V6 is a honey.

Yes check for corrosion. Also check how she idles. Should be smooth and silent. If not, she may need plug leads at £250 per set. Plugs are only changed at 60k and is another £200+ item so ensure its been done. Remember, you can have FMBSH and refuse to have any extra work done. This can include brake fluid and coolant at 4-5 years. This is recorded somewhere in the service book though (my specialist knew I'd refused the plugs). Other than that, check the dash display for the clock and outside temp gauge if its a facelift model. These can pixelate and become unreadable. The fix is a new cluster at £500, though they do come up on ebay from time to time. Other than that, and the corrosion, the only thing that I have suffered with was a failed Mass Air Sensor (very common on all cars these days) and an 02 sensor.

I do 25k a year and whilst not the fastest off the line, she's a great long legged cruiser, well able to hold her own in the outside lane.

Thanks for the replies.
I picked the car up last night after a thorough inspection and I'm well pleased with it. It's in a different league to the Jag, smoother, quieter, handles better, gives better mpg and is as quick. I love it.
